Lives of the Prophets

Harun (Aaron) — peace be upon him

Overview

Harun is Musa’s brother and explicitly a prophet.

1

Identity and prophethood

Harun is Musa’s brother and explicitly a prophet.

His assistance is more than an administrative role: Maryam names his prophethood, while both brothers bear a shared message before Pharaoh.

Era and setting

He is contemporary with Musa, without a Quranic birth date or age gap.

Musa cites his clearer speech when asking for help. Their setting spans Pharaoh’s court and the later liberated community.

3

Mission and teaching

He carries the message with Musa and leads the people during Musa’s absence.

He warns them against the calf and calls for obedience, explaining concern about division. The Quran does not make him the calf’s creator or supporter.

Musa leaves him responsible during the journey to Tur. Harun identifies the calf as a test, calls for obedience to the true Lord and explains his concern to prevent division, combining leadership, cooperation and counsel.

4

Family and descent

Musa is his brother, with shared motherhood reflected in their dialogue.

The address to Maryam as sister of Harun does not make her Musa’s contemporary; Muslim explains the practice of naming after earlier righteous figures.

5
