Al-'Alaq

Read in the name of your Lord Who created,

হে রাসূল! পড় তোমার রবের নামে, যিনি (সব কিছু) সৃষ্টি করেছেন।

created man from a clinging clot.

তিনি সৃষ্টি করেছেন মানুষকে ‘আলাক (জমাটবদ্ধ রক্তপিণ্ড) থেকে।

Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous,

পড়, আর তোমার রব মহাদয়ালু।

Who taught by the pen,

যিনি (মানুষকে) কলমের সাহায্যে শিক্ষা দিয়েছেন।

taught man what he did not know[1].

[1] These five verses (1-5) are the first ever verses revealed of the Qur’an. The Prophet (ﷺ) was retreating at a cave in the outskirts of Makkah when the angel Gabriel appeared before him, and ordered him to read. Since the Prophet (ﷺ) was unlettered, he would respond, “I cannot read.” Gabriel would then squeeze him tightly and order him again to read. Ultimately, Gabriel said to him: “Read in the name of your Lord …”.

তিনি মানুষকে শিক্ষা দিয়েছেন, যা সে জানত না।

Indeed, man transgresses

কখনো নয়, নিশ্চয় (পাপিষ্ঠ) মানুষ (আল্লাহর) সীমালঙ্ঘন করে থাকে।(২)

(২) যেমন আবূ জাহল।

when he deems himself to be self-sufficient.

কেননা সে নিজেকে স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ মনে করে।

Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

হে মানুষ! নিশ্চয় তোমার রবের দিকেই প্রত্যাবর্তন করতে হবে।

Have you seen the one who prevents[2]

[2] i.e., Abu Jahl was a pagan leader of the Makkah who was an arch-enemy of Islam.

তুমি কি তাকে দেখেছ, যে নিষেধ করে।(৩)

(৩) আবূ জাহেল কা‘বায় সালাত করতে নিষেধ করতো।

a slave [of Allah] from praying[3]?

[3] Abu Jahl abused the Prophet (ﷺ) when he prayed in the Holy Mosque.

এক বান্দা (মুহাম্মাদ)-কে, যখন সে (কা‘বায়) সালাত আদায় করে?

What if this [slave] is rightly guided,

তুমি কি লক্ষ্য করেছো, যদি সে হিদায়াতের ওপর থাকে,

and enjoins righteousness?

অথবা তাকওয়ার নির্দেশ দেয়?

How about the one who denies and turns away[4]?

[4] From what the Prophet (ﷺ) has brought and does he not fear Allah?

তুমি কি লক্ষ্য করেছো, যদি সে মিথ্যারোপ করে এবং মুখ ফিরিয়ে নেয়?

Does he not know that Allah is watching all?

সে কি জানে না যে, নিঃসন্দেহে আল্লাহ (তার আচরণ) দেখেন?

No indeed; if he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock[5]

[5] To the Hellfire.

কখনো নয়, যদি সে (৪)বিরত না হয়, তবে আমি তাকে কপালের সম্মুখভাগের চুল ধরে টেনে- হিঁচড়ে (জাহান্নামের দিকে) নিয়ে যাবো।

(৪) আমার বান্দাকে কষ্ট দেয়া ও তাঁর প্রতি মিথ্যারোপ করা থেকে।

a lying, sinful forelock[6].

[6] It alludes to the frontal lobe of the brain, where reasoning is processed.

সেই সম্মুখ চুলের গুচ্ছের অধিকারী ব্যক্তি (কথায়) মিথ্যাবাদী এবং (কর্মে) পাপিষ্ঠ।

So let him call his associates;

অতএব, সে (নিজেকে উদ্ধার করতে) তার সভাসদদেরকে ডেকে আনুক।

We will call the wardens of Hellfire[7].

[7] i.e., the coarse, rigorous, and harsh angels assigned for the Hellfire.

অচিরেই আমি ডেকে নিবো জাহান্নামের (কঠিনচিত্ত) প্রহরীদেরকে।

No indeed; do not obey him, but prostrate and draw near [to Allah].

কখনো নয়; তুমি তার (আদেশ-নিষেধ কোনটারই) আনুগত্য করবে না। আর আল্লাহর উদ্দেশ্যে সিজদা করো এবং (আনুগত্যের মাধ্যমে) তাঁর নৈকট্য লাভ করো।
